Carlson Gracie, Sr. was a pioneer for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and is still considered today to be one of the best representatives of the sport, both as a competitor and as a coach. Born in 1933 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Carlson Gracie was the oldest son of Carlos Gracie, who founded the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu variant of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. After defeating a former student of his uncle Helio Gracie at age 23, Carlson catapulted to fame and went on to reign as world champion from the 1950s to the 1970s and became the most sought-after Jiu-Jitsu instructor in Brazil. After teaching at his uncle’s academy, he opened his own, where many of the greatest names in Jiu-Jitsu and MMA have trained.
